JennAir Celebrates Badass, Trailblazing Women at Modernism Week in Palm Springs

JennAir Moderism Week 2019 - Female DesignersThe year of the woman continues well into 2019. As JennAir heads to Modernism Week in Palm Springs, Calif., the brand continues to defy convention with an empowering lineup of female designers from all different verticals — illustration, streetwear, tattoo art, and kitchen appliance design — for the brand’s custom panel and with a talented writer and vocalist headlining JennAir’s exclusive opening weekend party.

As guests witness a new era of luxury come to life at JennAir’s Embrace the Night party, they will be treated to a special unplugged performance by the powerhouses — sure to be one of the most buzzed-about moments of Modernism Week. A contemporary R&B singer, Bus participated in The Voice of Holland and has been most recently featured in Rolling Stone magazine.

JennAir will then take to the mainstage at CAMP during Modernism Week to pay homage to the badass women who are rejecting expectation in the name of progress and changing the design industry as we know it. Through a panel discussion titled Women in Design: Shattering the Status Quo, JennAir will bring together cross-disciplinary perspectives on design from panelists including:

  • Jessica McConnell, Global Color, Material and Finish (CMF) Sr. Design Manager at Whirlpool  Corporation. Choosing progress over stagnation, McConnell is responsible for the game-changing design direction and brand reset driven by JennAir’s two new design expressions, RISE™ and NOIR™, and led the creation of industry-exclusive Cuts, Burlesque and Smoke & Brass.
  • Sophia Chang, Illustrator, Designer and Entrepreneur. The New York born and bred illustrator is part of a new generation of young entrepreneurs that are flexing beyond what meets the eye. With her BFA degree in Illustration from Parsons School of Design, Sophia is a renaissance woman for the modern era, immersing herself in graphic design, illustration and apparel and spanning industries from streetwear to tech.
  • Esther Garcia, Tattoo Artist and Designer. In an industry notoriously dominated by men, Esther started a private, all-female artist driven tattoo shop in Chicago. Predominantly self-taught, this trailblazer brings an unique curiosity and rigorous investigative method to all artistic projects and is unafraid of a challenge.
  • Emily Oberg, Fashion Designer and Creative Director. Emily entered the world of streetwear ahead of the trend. Through an unorthodox entry to the industry at 22, Emily started her career building up Complex Magazine’s video platform, before working as KITH Women’s creative lead and going on to found her own streetwear brand, Sporty & Rich, creating a name for herself in fashion.

JennAir Moderism Week 2019 - Female Designers

JennAir Moderism Week 2019 - Female DesignersThe panel will be moderated by the powerful and engaging Kimberly Drew, art curator and writer. Over the course of her career, Drew has worked for Hyperallergic, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Lehmann Maupin, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has delivered lectures and participated in panel discussions nationally and internationally, and her writing has appeared across top women’s publications.

At Modernism Week and beyond, JennAir celebrates both the women driving progress for the field via its custom-built experiences as well as the majority-female teams bringing this mission to life every day across the JennAir brand, the Darkhorse agency team and Whirlpool Global Consumer Design teams.
